New Beetle Convention Canceled in Roswell

Associated Press
ROSWELL — A Roswell convention once billed as the largest gathering of Volkswagen New Beetles in the country has been canceled.
Roswell Convention and Civic Center director Dusty Huckabee says the annual event has been nixed because of skyrocketing gasoline prices.
He also says Volkswagen was not interested in sponsoring the event this year.
Volkswagen launched a commercial in 1999, joking that the New Beetles were "reverse-engineered by UFOs," based on technology gathered from the supposed crash of a UFO on a Roswell-area ranch in 1947.
Military officials later said recovered debris came from a weather balloon.
