New Mexico State Point Guard Transfers to Wyoming

Associated Press
LARAMIE, Wyo. — Wyoming has filled its final scholarship position of the 2008-09 recruiting class with the addition of New Mexico State transfer JayDee Luster.
Transfer rules require the 5-foot-9 point guard from Hoover High School in San Diego to sit out the upcoming season. He will be eligible to play as a redshirt sophomore starting in the fall of 2009.
Luster could turn out to be the Cowboys' answer to the point guard position when senior Brandon Ewing graduates after next season.
Wyoming Coach Heath Schroyer said he recruited Luster when he was an assistant coach at Fresno State.
"We've known him for a long time," Schroyer said Wednesday. "There's no question he's a very talented basketball player. He's a true point and someone that will really complement the other young guys in the program right now.
"I thought it was a perfect time. I wanted to be able to have a young point guard in the program who can go with these young guys."
Luster played in 27 games in his freshman season at New Mexico State before opting to transfer.
In high school, he averaged 19.5 points, 8.8 assists and 5.8 steals per game, but he sat out most of his senior season following a car accident.
"JayDee's the perfect player," said Ollie Goulston, Luster's coach at Hoover High. "I personally think (Wyoming) got a steal. I think he's going to be a terrific player and Laramie's going to fall in love with him."
Luster joins Mahamoud Diakite, A.J. Davis and Boubacar Sylla as members of this year's recruiting class. When he becomes eligible, he will be a part of a sophomore class that includes Sylla and Davis as well as center Adam Waddell and guard Afam Moujeke, who will both be redshirt freshmen this year.
"Having him in the program for a year to play against Brandon and Sean (Ogirri) is going to help both parties," Schroyer said. "And adding a young man as talented as him, along with the other guys in his class, sets us up for the future very, very well."
