Kidnapped 9-Year-Old from Calif. Found Safe in Juarez Church

Associated Press
MISSION VIEJO, Calif. — Days after a Southern California man shot his estranged wife in the face and kidnapped their son, the 9-year-old is on his way home.
Missing since Wednesday, Ryan Ramos was found in "excellent condition" around noon Sunday, alone at a Mormon Church in Juarez, Mexico, Orange County sheriff's Lt. Kurt Vasentine said.
Early today, the boy was across the border in El Paso, awaiting a private flight to Southern California, according to sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino.
Lonnie Ramos, 46, shot his estranged wife in the face on Wednesday when she went to his home in Portola Hills to pick up their son after a custody visit.
Gynnae Ramos' condition has been upgraded to "good" at Mission Hospital, Vasentine said.
Authorities are still searching for Lonnie Ramos, and are pursuing at least one lead, Vasentine said.
"We are currently looking into the report that an American tourist was involved in a traffic accident in Juarez," Vasentine said.
Lonnie Ramos is considered to be armed and extremely dangerous. Child abduction and attempted murder charges await him in the U.S.
After the shooting on Wednesday, a statewide Amber Alert was issued for two cars that Ramos might have been driving. The motor home was added after someone reported renting it to the fugitive.
Authorities then got a tip that the two had been spotted crossing the border by foot near Andrade, a small town in Imperial County. Andrade is on the border, about 5 miles west of Yuma, Ariz., and about 160 miles east of San Diego.
The 39-foot purple-and-gold motor home rented by Lonnie Ramos was found there Saturday.
Ramos apparently tried to buy plane tickets for himself and his son at John Wayne Airport Wednesday night but was unable to do so because he refused to show any identification or provide his name, Orange County sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino said.
Ramos' wife filed for divorce in 2003 and the two have been locked in a bitter divorce and custody battle, court records indicated.
