NM Governor Approves Money To Fight Wildfires

Associated Press
SANTA FE — Gov. Bill Richardson has signed an executive order that frees up $750,000 to fight and prevent wildfires around the state.
The funds — the first approved for fiscal year 2009 — will go toward personnel, supplies and contract services for aircraft and equipment.
More than 600 wildfires have charred about 350,000 acres on state and private land this year, Dan Ware, a spokesman for the state Forestry Division, said Thursday.
"Despite the fact we're getting rainfall on some parts of the state, the potential exists for there to be a lot of fires this year," he said. "We need to have that money in place to take care of the costs as they mount."
