Bees Attack, Kill Dog in Carlsbad

      CARLSBAD — A dog died when authorities say it was attacked by a swarm of suspected Africanized bees at a home south of Carlsbad.
    Another dog and a horse were injured by the insects Wednesday.
    Emergency personnel from the Carlsbad Fire Department and the Joel Volunteer Fire Department applied soapy foam to try to suffocate the bees.
    The Carlsbad Current-Argus reports the bees had taken shelter amid some wood and debris on the property.
    Africanized, or killer, bees are similar to common honey bees but are very aggressive.
    Africanized bees were first discovered in New Mexico in Hidalgo County in 1993.
